Costa, Risca
Tir Collective was appointed by Mileway to prepare a Green Infrastructure Statement, Landscape and Visual Note, and Landscape Strategy for a proposed Costa coffee shop and drive-thru in Pontymister, Risca. The site occupies a prominent roundabout location adjacent to the A467 and B4591, within a mixed-use urban setting.
The proposals include tree and shrub planting to enhance visual amenity, integrate the new development into its setting, and mitigate the loss of several existing trees. The final design retains two cherry trees and existing hedgerow, while introducing 14 new Extra Heavy Standard trees underplanted with native and evergreen shrubs. Raised planters with grasses, herbaceous plants, and climbing species along the building elevation provide additional greening. The landscape scheme enhances biodiversity, visual screening, and local amenity through pollinator-friendly planting and integrated ecological features.
Key Project Features
- 14 new Extra Heavy Standard trees with native and ornamental shrub underplanting to soften views and support biodiversity.
- Climbing plants and raised planters to green building façades and enhance site character.
- Ecological enhancements including native planting, bird boxes, and hedgehog gaps.
